"...there's nothing out there that compares to CRYSTALYX®."
RANDY WALLS
Guajolote Ranch Skidmore, TX
The decision to feed CRYSTALYX® comes down to economics for Randy Walls, manager of the Guajolote Ranch at Skidmore, Texas. "For us, it's the dollars and cents of CRYSTALYX® compared to other feeds. CRYSTALYX® is cheaper and gives us more benefits."
Walls has calculated the cost savings. On his ranch, where the CRYSTALYX® is shipped directly from the plant, CRYSTALYX® costs 19 cents a day compared to 28 cents a day for bagged protein feed. "As far as other molasses-based products, there's nothing out there that compares to CRYSTALYX® that I've found," Walls says.
He usually starts the cows back on CRYSTALYX® in August to help build them up for the winter. During the spring and early summer when grass is plentiful, the cows come off CRYSTALYX®. But drought conditions during the summer of 1998 pushed him to use CRYSTALYX® year-round.
While neighboring ranches were forced to wean calves in July and sell them immediately, Walls still had calves on the side of the cows and the cows were still holding condition. It was a gamble, but Walls hoped the CRYSTALYX® would help postpone weaning until August, when he hoped the calf market would rebound.
In addition to raising Beef Master cows, Guajolote Ranch also retained some steers for the feedlot last fall. After a 90-day backgrounding program of dry grass and CRYSTALYX®, the steers entered the feedlot and went right on feed. After 107 days in the feedlot, Walls said the cattle continue to gain well and haven't incurred any veterinary costs.
